Game On??

Professor Bruce Pardy:
on the Nadine Wellwood interview on June 11, 2026.

“Here’s one of the problems with the 10th question being added to this ballot.

Ideally, you would not have an independence related question on this ballot at all. It may be too early, but more importantly, they don’t get it.  Doesn’t it get mixed up with those other nine questions?

And here’s another big risk of this 10th question: This 10th question establishes a double standard for the two competing sides. You have a “remain” side (remain in Canada), and a “leave” side (an independence side).

Here’s the double standard. This 10th question on the October ballot is a “free” try for “remain”. If “remain” wins this question in October, it’s done! There will be no future independence referendum.

And so those people who are saying, “Oh, this is actually a good thing because now we have more time.” No, you don’t. You are still voting in October. You still have to win the referendum in October. It’s just that if you do win then you might, in future – sometime sooner or later…get a future referendum that you also have to win.

So “remain” can win once and if it loses the first time it can try again. It only has to win once.

“Leave” and independence has to win twice. It has to win in October and then it has to win – if and when the other real independence referendum is ever held.”
