Why Now? Why Independence?
Derek Fildebrandt Knows Why
@Dfildebrandt says Alberta’s independence debate is about more than economics or constitutional reform.
It is also about identity, culture and whether the Canada many Albertans still feel attached to can be preserved.WATCH: https://t.co/VYb3fxreMT

An Empassioned Delivery by Premier Smith
A Reasonable Overview
In this episode of Tap the Maple, we explore the history behind Alberta’s growing independence movement, from the National Energy Program to pipeline cancellations, equalization debates, rural Alberta’s struggles, Western alienation, and why nearly 302,000 Albertans signed a petition to pursue a referendum.
Whether you support Alberta remaining in Canada or believe separation should be on the table, understanding why this movement exists has never been more important.
Canada is spending our hard-earned tax money “like there’s no tomorrow!” However, our children and grandchildren deserve to live a life without the burden of never-ending debt payments.
An intelligent, well-spoken 23-year-old beseeches seniors to think about what the federal Liberals have done to their children & grandchildren’s future when they consider taking away Alberta’s leverage by voting for Option 1 on Question 10. [Check out the bottom video here…]

CARNEY SUPPORT THE NEW WORLD ORDER
Step by step…Canada’s Demise
“Government poisons the private market. Private capital leaves. Government steps in, takes control of the asset, assumes the risk, and demands applause for “nation-building.” That is not capitalism. That is not even competent socialism. That is Ottawa breaking the window and then selling us the replacement glass.”
“Projects are no longer built because they make commercial sense. They are built because they satisfy coalitions, calm regional anger, reward favoured partners, and generate press conferences. Like the West Coast pipeline project, the result is entirely predictable: higher costs, longer delays, politicised procurement, weaker accountability, questionable economics and fewer projects overall.”
“For Albertans, that should be a five-alarm fire.” READ COLIN MACLEOD’S SUBSTACK BELOW:
How did we get here?
How we got here, righting a wrong and “what might have been”

For: Seniors for Independence
For many people, the discussion of politics is a big turn off and in social circles, it’s often seen as a topic to be avoided at all costs. This is unfortunate because if it was socially acceptable to have calm and reasonable discussions about politics, we might not find ourselves in a situation (like now) where so many people are walking around mis and/or uninformed about how the decisions governments make affect them. Over time, this mentality causes apathy and indifference opening the door for corrupt governments to brainwash citizens through media propaganda. Anyone who’s read George Orwell’s dystopian “fictional” novel 1984, knows what I’m talking about.

This article from the National Post should be a “wake up call” to our Federal government. But will they take any meaningful action?

So, we know that Alberta has been a generous partner in Confederation for decades. But generosity must have limits when it becomes exploitation. Click here to review other “disconnects” between Alberta and our Federal government.
The Fiscal Reality
Alberta’s debt is high (for now), but let us explain why that is the case. Click on the Canadian Taxpayers Federation “Debt Clock” for Alberta to see our province’s up-to-date numbers:

What’s the main reason for our provincial debt?
It’s astounding to see the money being drained from Alberta and claimed by Ottawa in “real time”…CLICK HERE FOR THE COUNTER…or on this image:

Alberta has been a “have” province — meaning it contributes to federal equalization payments but receives none — since the mid-1960s. In the 2025–26 fiscal year, Quebec alone received $13.6 billion in equalization payments, and Manitoba received $4.7 billion — while Alberta received nothing.
In 2023, the federal government raised roughly $14.5 billion more from Alberta-based taxpayers than it spent in the province on programs. That gap has existed for generations.
the Fraser Institute found Alberta sent Ottawa $321.9 billion more than it received over two decades — nearly four times B.C.’s net contribution. Without Alberta, every other Canadian taxpayer would owe roughly $1,007 more a year. So when someone says Alberta depends on Canada, ask who’s been carrying whom.
Among Albertans who support separation, a striking 88% cite a desire to exit the equalization system as their motivation. This is not ideology — it is arithmetic.
The Democratic Deficit
Alberta sends its representatives to Ottawa election after election, only to find that our priorities — energy development, fiscal restraint, provincial jurisdiction — are routinely overruled by the more populous provinces of central Canada. In the 2025 federal election, 63.5% of Albertans voted Conservative, yet the province holds only 37 of 343 seats in the House of Commons. Our voice is systematically diluted.
The Growing Conversation
Support for Alberta independence has grown significantly — a January 2026 poll found that 31% of Albertans support becoming an independent country, up nine points since June 2023. A subsequent April 2026 CBC/Trend Research poll found 27% would vote for separation. That is hundreds of thousands of Albertans — and the number grows as frustrations mount.
A citizen-driven petition for a referendum on independence was approved by Elections Alberta in late 2025, with signatures collected from January through May 2026 — requiring 177,732 valid signatures to trigger a referendum. Over 300,000 signatures were presented to Elections Alberta…only to have a Federally appointed judge rule against having them verified!

What About Seniors Specifically? Seniors are on fixed incomes. We depend on stable healthcare, predictable pensions, and a cost of living that doesn’t spiral out of control. Federal policies that restrict Alberta’s energy sector directly reduce the provincial revenues that fund seniors’ services. An independent Alberta would have full control over its resource revenues, its healthcare delivery, and its pension arrangements — giving seniors greater security, not less.
